"When are you interviewing the band?" an inquiry arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can become their extra sister."

There's just one problem: The sender also wants to be the Haims' additional sibling. And we're not alone. Several famous admirers have publicly begged for the position.

It's clear something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path playing gigs at local delicatessens with their family. Today, they are multi-time Grammy Award nominees.

In the tradition of the greatest ensembles, they're a inseparable unit. Their visuals repeatedly show them walking in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such pure exuberance you can't help but think, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members told us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a guitar'," states Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the greatest compliment. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage people to make music."

"So all gets an invitation to be the next Haim sister."

Historic Recognition

The trio have called into a break, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first female band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the accolade resonates with the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major step," continues Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the pioneers that came before us."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The record was born from a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that odd liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The lyrics detail endings and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they want to be.

"I love way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to actively work on ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Sound

That newfound confidence demanded a different sonic direction – more unpolished and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Humor

The band's candor inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their personal horror stories.

One man ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Legacy

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their place in the music world.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an global audience.

However the band will consistently be their top commitment.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was little," concludes Alana. "There is no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
