Trump’s most recent warning to impose an extra full import duty on products from China has been called a “typical example” of American hypocrisy, per the Beijing administration.
A representative of the ministry further commented that Beijing could implement its own unrevealed “responsive actions” if the White House occupant carries out his pledge, noting that the country was “unafraid” of a looming commercial battle.
This past Friday, the former president responded at China’s decision to strengthen its rules for overseas sales of rare earth minerals, charging Beijing of “turning aggressive” and attempting to hold the global community “under its control”.
He also vowed to withdraw from a scheduled meeting with Beijing’s head of state Xi Jinping, which was expected to take place during a summit in Seoul before the month ends.
Trump’s comments on last Friday unsettled financial markets, with the S&P 500 share index dropping over two and a half percent, marking its largest decline since April.
These statements revived apprehensions of a commercial dispute between the US and China.
This past spring, the respective governments had reached an agreement to drop triple-digit tariffs on each other’s goods, which had raised the prospect of bilateral trade stopping between the two nations.
Consequently, US tariffs on Chinese goods subject to an added thirty percent tariff compared with the beginning of 2025, while US goods entering China face a 10% tariff.
The most recent comments from China – released by the Ministry of Commerce in the form of written responses to media inquiries – reflected language from the peak of the recent trade conflict.
The remarks condemned United States controls on electronic components while defending the country’s own export controls on rare earth minerals as “routine measures” to safeguard domestic safety and that of all nations.
Their representative remarked that for “an extended period”, the US had “overstretched the concept of state security, abused overseas sale restrictions and “adopted biased policies against Beijing.
“Resorting to trade levy ultimatums is not the correct approach to deal with China,” the official said.
“China’s position on a trade conflict has remained steady: we wish to avoid one, but we are fearless of one.”
Last week, China revealed it was strengthening foreign shipment restrictions on key elements and further resources critical for cutting-edge industry.
This was seen as a important measure, as the country processes about ninety percent of the planet’s critical minerals, which are employed in items such as photovoltaic modules and handheld devices.
Latest statements from Washington and Beijing are being seen by observers as a strategy of strengthening positions ahead of future trade talks.
Remains uncertain whether a summit between Donald Trump and China’s leader, expected at a high-level meeting in the Republic of Korea before month’s end, will still proceed.
