Administration Announces Government Worker Layoffs as Shutdown Approaches Three-Week Mark

The White House disclosed the start of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on earlier warnings linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Early Information

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the official process for letting employees go.

Although Vought did not specify which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that notices had been issued within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that layoffs would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Union leaders cautions that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the actions in court.

This is shameful that the government has used the government shutdown as an pretext to illegally fire thousands of workers who provide critical services to the public across the country,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved before then.

These terminations occurred on the same day that federal workers received only a partial paycheck for the final days of the previous month but not the start of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the beginning of the month.

A public service advocate, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s effect on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make government staff bear the burden because our leaders in the legislature and the White House have failed to keep our government running,” Stier stated. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are continuing to be paid during the funding gap.
